Introduction
Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) is a central concern of any workplace and is a complex issue requiring considerable knowledge and thought. Understanding intersectionality can help management and employees to grasp the complexities of identity and creating a truly welcoming and inclusive workplace for all.
Intersectionality is about how different aspects of individual identity can create different layers and levels of advantage and disadvantage. Within the workplace it is used as a tool for equality, helping us to reject a one-size-fits-all approach to inclusion.
Intersectionality is a term coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw who was examining a legal case from 1976 where a group of Black women argued they were being discriminated against in employment by General Motors. GM argued that because they hired white women, they were not sexist and because they hired Black men, they were not racist. The case was dismissed by the courts. Crenshaw highlights how this case shows how multiple points of marginalisation created a unique form of discrimination and coined ‘Intersectionality’ to refer to these impacts of intersecting identities
This session will provide an introduction to intersectionality and how it relates to workplace practices, in particular those relating to EDI
